Human Research Ethics

The University requires researchers to conform to the NH&MRC Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research; the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007); and to other relevant legislation and guidelines.

This requirement applies to all staff, undergraduate honours, postgraduate and higher degree research whether funded or not. It also applies to teaching projects or demonstrations that involve human participants. Note that the National Statement refers not only to the physical and mental well-being of participants, but also to matters of confidentiality, privacy, consent and researcher integrity.

The University has established a Committee to review the ethical aspects of procedures where humans participate in research and in teaching projects. This Committee, known as the Human Research Ethics Committee, is directly responsible to the Vice-Chancellor. Before conducting any research investigation or teaching demonstration with human participants, staff and students of the University are required to submit an Ethics Application Form (only version 1 - Nov 2011 will be accepted) for approval.
