Research & Research Study

August 2006 RESNET Meeting Report

Visit from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steven Schwartz

Professor Steven SchwartzProfessor Schwartz provided research administrators with an overview of his plans for the University, including:

  • an overview of the research agenda and the new resources being applied to furthering research at MQ
  • Internal and external factors that helped to set the agenda (‘stage of life’ factors; the Research Quality Framework)
  • The expectations on academic staff, as articulated in the KPIs for DVC-Research and Deans
  • How the KPIs will articulate through performance management systems throughout the University

In doing so, he reminded ResNet members that Macquarie University is the 9th Australian University on the much-watched Shanghai Jaio Tong ratings index for Universities, and that we have three of the world’s top scientific researchers in that index (based on citations in Science and Nature).  Macquarie University is in a good financial position to grow its research strength and he looks to ResNet to work with academic staff and the Research Office to create a smooth, user-friendly administrative interface for research-active staff.

Steven described his role as ensuring MQ had the staff, buildings and wherewithal to improve its world ranking and welcomed ResNet’s support as a 'grass roots' initiated and driven change agent in delivering the MQ@50 vision.
