Successful ARC Linkage Projects to Commence in July 2008

The ARC have just announced the outcomes for 2007 Round 2 Linkage Projects grants for projects to start in July 2008. Macquarie University has received 5 grants at a 62.5% success rate, which places the University fourth out of 37 research institutions, ahead of all GO8 universities. The national success rate was 42.7%. In terms of the funding allocation, Macquarie placed 14 out of 37 institutions, securing nearly $1.5M in ARC funding and $2.15M in partner organisation contributions.

Macquarie has had success rates above the national average for 8 of the past 10 rounds of ARC Linkage, for which the national average success rate is generally in the range 40-50%, twice that for ARC Discovery. However this masks comparatively low application numbers, and therefore, low grant numbers. Some 47% of the $64m ARC funding in this round went into Biological Sciences and Biotechnology (21%), and Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences (26%), for which we had only 2 applications. Obviously there is considerable potential for Macquarie researchers to greatly improve our performance in attracting Linkage funding.

For details of funded grants see the ARC website.(http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/lp/LP08_Rd2_Org.htm)
