The Macquarie University Research Centre (MQRC) Scheme is an important part of the University's strategy to develop areas of research strength. It provides the formal means by which potential new Research Centres come to be branded and promoted as Macquarie University Research Centres, with a view to the Centres eventually becoming National Research Centres with very substantial external funding.

Each MQRC is expected to fulfill a range of functions aimed at strengthening, extending, and promoting the research of its members, enhancing the research training activities of its students and building research linkages both nationally and internationally. All Centres will be expected to support high quality research that contributes to the University's stated regional and national research objectives, including those of the advancement of knowledge, economic and social development and promoting national and international research collaborations.
