Macquarie University Research Development Grants Scheme

2008 Closing date: Thursday 24 April 2008 5pm

The purpose of the Macquarie University Research Development scheme is to enable researchers to develop basic or strategic research projects into proposals for submission to the ARC Discovery-Projects or NHMRC Project Grants schemes, or to develop applied research projects into proposals for submission to the ARC Linkage Projects scheme.  Application for substantial external funding in the year following the final year of MQRDG funding is a Condition of the Grant Award.

Submission:

Applications must be submitted to the Research Office in hardcopy by the time and date above, via the Dean's office - please refer to the relevant Divisional officer (listed below) for Divisional hand-in dates.  An electronic copy of the application should also be forwarded to grants@mq.edu.au by the closing date and time.  A signed certification page must accompany hardcopy applications, however, a coversheet is not required.

Changes since last year:

The scheme has been enhanced to allow researchers to apply for funding to develop collaborative partnerships with eligible external parties.  A proportion of the available funding will be set aside to fund a minimum of six Partnership proposals with the aim of submitting subsequent applications for ARC Linkage Projects funding.

Applicants are advised to carefully read the eligibility criteria, paying particular attention to issues relating to the number of grants allowed and grant period, before proceeding with their application.

Clarfiication of Funding Rules:

Please note that following clarification in relation to eligibility requirements for application to the current round of MQRDG:

  • Current holders of MQRDG funding awarded from 1 July 2006 are ineligible to apply to the current round of MQRDG irrespective of the actual duration of the 2006 project (either one or two years, or a fraction thereof).  This includes projects for which funding was requested for two years, but for which a single year only was approved – the grant start and end dates are 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2008.  The next MQRDG round to which grantees falling into this category are therefore eligible to apply is the 2009 offering.
  • Researchers who held a MQRDG grant in 2005 (awarded from 1 July 2005 to 30 June 2006) and who were therefore eligible to apply for a single year grant only in 2006 are eligible to apply to the current round of MQRDG.  Applicants should note the requirement to provide evidence of application for external funding at Section 11 of the application form.

Please note the following clarification in relation to MQRDG applicants intending to take a period of OSP during the term of their MQRDG grant:

  • As stated on Page 2 of the Funding Rules, funding provided via the MQRDG scheme cannot be used to support research to be undertaken while on OSP.  The OSP “project” is to be supported from the OSP budget and must stand alone – it cannot be subsidised by funding allocated under an internal research grant scheme.
  • As stated on Page 5 of the Funding Rules, when an researcher is absent from campus during a period of OSP, and particularly in cases of overseas travel, it may be advantageous to undertake research associated with their MQRDG grant at a site or sites of study away from their OSP location, and at some distance from Australia.  For instance, a researcher visiting Oxford for their OSP research may consider a side trip to another European destination which is associated with their MQRDG project, providing a considerable saving in air fares between the European location and Australia.  In this instance, funding for travel between Oxford and the European destination for research which is not part of the OSP research, but which is consistent with the MQRDG application budget, will be considered by the Panel.

Apple Macintosh users opening RTF files:
To help avoid formatting issues, save the RTF file to your desktop, open Microsoft Word, then go to 'File' and select 'Open'. In the pop up panel, make sure the dropdown option next to 'Show' is set to 'All Readable Documents'. Now you can select the RTF file and open it.
