What types of research grants are available from the NHMRC?
Program Grant; Project Grant; Development Grant; Enabling Grant; and Centre of Clinical Research Excellence
What is a Program Grant?
Program Grants provide support for broadly based collaborative research activities undertaken by teams of researchers with proven track records. Funding is provided for the support of the team’s research activity across a broad research theme.
What is a Project Grant ?
Project Grants provide support for investigator initiated research and include the provision of an avenue for less experienced researchers to access NHMRC Research Grant funding (New Investigators). Funding is provided for the support of individuals and small teams of researchers.
What is a Centre of Clinical Research Excellence?
Centres of Clinical Research Excellence provide support for clinical research with the potential to lead to improved health outcomes for the community, training of clinical researchers, particularly those with a capacity for independent research and future leadership roles, and effective translation of research outcomes into clinical practice. Funding is provided to support innovative, high quality clinical (human) research conducted either by established investigators with a strong track record in clinical research and clinical training or new clinical research collaborators.
What is a Development Grant?
Development Grants provide support for health or medical research that has commercial potential and the potential to benefit the Australian community. These grants overcome the gap in funding between the end of a high quality basic research program and the developments required to make the project commercially attractive to potential investors. Funding is provided for research commercialisation at the early proof-of-concept stage.
What is an Enabling Grant?
Enabling Grants provide support to strengthen the research base in particular areas so that Australian researchers can continue high quality, world-class research. Funds are provided for specific facilities and/or activities to enhance the national health and medical research effort.
What is the deadline for NHMRC Progress Reports?
In accordance with the NHMRC Deed of Agreement, progress reports must be submitted to the NHMRC by 31 March following each calendar year in which there were payments or carry forward of funds for a funded NHMRC Project Grant, except in the final year when the Final Report form must be used. Centres of Clinical Research Excellence progress reports are due by 31 December during each year of funding, except in the final year when a Final Report should be submitted.
Why does the NHMRC require Progress Reports?
Progress Reports enable the NHMRC to assess whether satisfactory progress is being achieved.

What is the deadline for NHMRC Final Reports?
In accordance with the NHMRC Deed of Agreement, a Final Report must be submitted to the NHMRC within six months of the completion of the funding period or termination of the award.

Where do I submit the Final Report?
The first-named participant (CI or Fellow) should submit the signed paper copy and an electronic copy of the Final Report to the Research Grants Officers, Research Office E11A : grants@mq.edu.au (subject: NHMRC Final Report).
