Dean Higher Degree Research Professor John HooperJohn Hooper was appointed Dean Higher Degree Research at Macquarie University in Sydney in March 2005. He was formerly the Dean of The Graduate School at The Australian National University in Canberra from 1998 to March 2005; and previously inaugural Director of Postgraduate Research, Chair of the Research Degrees and Scholarships Committee and Deputy Chair of the Board of Research at Murdoch University in Perth from 1994 to 1997. Professor Hooper's experience as a graduate research Dean thus includes appointments in both a research-intensive Group of 8 (Go8) University and in two Innovative Research Universities (IRU).

Professor Hooper graduated from the University of Sydney with a BA with First Class Honours in History and the University Medal, and taught for three years at the University of Sydney before taking up a doctoral research scholarship at St Antony's College, University of Oxford. He was awarded a DPhil (Doctor of Philosophy) in Modern History from Oxford, and was a Leverhulme Scholar at the British Institute in Paris.

Professor Hooper's major focus since 1994 has been on the development of graduate and postdoctoral education in Australian universities. He contributed to the Quality Assurance in Higher Education reviews in 1994-95 (in relation to postgraduate teaching, the research management process, research outcomes and research improvement at Murdoch). Professor Hooper has developed institutional codes of practice for postgraduate research supervision, and postgraduate research management plans to facilitate higher degree research education.

Professor Hooper was co-Project Director, with Margot Pearson, of the research project on Postdoctoral Training and Employment Outcomes for the Evaluations and Investigations Programme of the Higher Education Division of DETYA (2001). He is a founding member of the Council of Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies (DDoGS) in Australia, and an elected member of the national executive of DDoGS.
