Definitions of a Higher Degree Thesis by Research

A higher degree research thesis embodies the results of original research and investigations by a candidate for a higher degree which satisfies the requirements of the specific higher degree rules.

The Doctor of Philosophy thesis must form a distinct contribution to the knowledge of the subject and afford evidence of coherence and of originality shown either by the discovery of new facts or by the exercise of independent critical power.

Professional doctoral degrees such as the Doctor of Business Administration, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Applied Linguistics and Doctor of Professional Communication have been designed as professional doctoral degrees, involving advanced coursework, research and investigation in a relevant area of theory, policy or practice. The thesis must make a distinct contribution to the improvement of professional practice or policy in the field of study.

The research thesis for the degree Master of Philosophy must form a contribution to knowledge in the area with which it deals by presenting new interpretations of facts or by demonstrating an independent critical ability to evaluate existing material in a new light.

The degree of Master (by research) thesis must have adequately placed the topic in the context of current knowledge from the appropriate theoretical and/or professional perspective and must have satisfactorily linked empirical outcomes or new evaluations with the relevant literature.
