Program overview
The China Scholarship Council (CSC) and Maquarie University (MQ) will jointly award about 10 postgraduate research scholarships each year to students from PR China, who intend to undertake a postgraduate research degree at MQ. Candidates undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy program will be given priority. If the selected Chinese students successfully complete the requirements of the designated degree program, they will be conferred a Doctor of Philosophy degree by MQ.
- Priority Areas of Research
- CSC and MQ undertake to collaborate in the CSC priority areas of study (as below) and MQ research Concentration fields (please see Appendix):
- Communication and Information Technology
- Agriculture
- Life Sciences and Public Health
- Material Sciences and New Materials
- Energy and the Environment
- Engineering
- Applied Social Sciences and WTO-related Areas
Eligibility
- Candidates will be citizens and permanent residents of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application;
- Candidates must not be currently working or studying abroad;
- Successful candidates must return to China upon completion of their studies and/or research;
- Candidates must hold a conditional offer of enrolment subject to the CSC award. They must therefore fulfill the relevant academic entry requirements set by the admitting department of MQ, including a high level of English language proficiency;
- Candidates must also comply with the Australian Government’s English proficiency requirements for the issue of a student visa. Candidates should check those requirements with the nearest Australian diplomatic post or the relevant website: http://www.immi.gov.au. Candidates should note that owing to the citizenship of PR China, candidates may be required to meet those requirements through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
- Candidates should be intending to pursue a postgraduate research degree in one of the priority academic areas identified by CSC or one of MQ Concentrations of Research Excellence (CORES). However, applicants to other study/research areas will also be considered. The support academic areas are also subject to the availability of relevant programs of study at MQ, as published in Handbook of Postgraduate Studies;
- Candidate should satisfy the selection criteria set out by CSC by completing the CSC Application Form and the CSC Employer Reference Form at http://apply.csc.edu.cn/.
Further program information is available at http://www.csc.edu.cn/gb/readarticle/readarticle.asp?articleid=2393
Funding model
The duration of the scholarships will vary in accordance with the course. Doctoral enrolment at MQ is four years.
For successful candidates who meet MQ’s entry criteria and who are awarded the CSC stipend, MQ will award a tuition fee scholarship. MQ will also provide each Doctoral student with a living stipend during the fourth year where it or part thereof is needed. This will be at the same rate as CSC had funded in the first three years and is provisional upon the candidate meeting MQ’s normal standard of academic progression upon review at the end of three years of study and again six months later. CSC will consider their application for a living allowance (for the first three years for Doctoral students) as prescribed from time to time by the Chinese Government (including Student Health Cover), a return international airfare by the most economical route, and visa application fees.
If a candidate has a conditional MQ offer of enrolment subject to the CSC award but CSC award is not forthcoming, the candidate may still enrol but will be required to pay all costs.
Application Process and Time Scale
- Candidates should directly apply for admission to MQ before 31 January 2008 (for a start in 2008).
- Simultaneously, candidates must complete an application for funding and employer reference to CSC (forms are available online at http://apply.csc.edu.cn). A hard copy of the signed CSC Application Form along the completed CSC Employer Reference Form and a copy of the full application to MQ, including supporting documentation, must be submitted to CSC by 31 January 2008.
- By the end of February 2008 MQ will provide CSC with a ranked list of suitable candidates (names and subject areas) to be considered for the scholarship program and a copy of the admissions offer letters for each candidate put forward.
- By the end of March, CSC will evaluate the listed candidates according to CSC requirements and priorities, and provide MQ with a shortlist of potential scholarship recipients.
- In April MQ and CSC will announce the final list of scholarship recipients.
