ICS MQRES Physics Organic Semiconductors PhD Scholarship

Closing Date: 17 October 2008

PhD Scholarship in Experimental Condensed Matter and Synchrotron Physics

A full-time PhD Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarships (MQRES) is currently available in the Division of Information and Communication Sciences for a project in experimental condensed matter and synchrotron Physics. The successful candidate will undertake PhD research on Selective Photo-Bleaching of Organic Semiconductors for Electronic Applications.

Organic semiconductors are currently the subject of intense study due to the huge technological interest in developing carbon-based electronic devices (e.g. OLED displays, RFID tags etc). This project is designed to tackle an industry-wide problem: no commercially useful way has yet been developed to pattern active devices, such as transistors, into organic semiconductors. The project will investigate a new and innovative technique to pattern organic circuits using ultraviolet laser light. The project will involve the thin-film growth, ultraviolet modification, and characterization of several key organic semiconductor materials with a view to developing a new technique to manufacture active electronic (e.g. transistors, LEDs etc) devices using organic semiconductors.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic and international students. Applicants should have completed an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours in Telecommunications, Engineering or an equivalent discipline, or equivalent research qualifications such as a Masters degree with substantial thesis component.  Early career professionals interested in returning to higher degree studies are particularly encouraged to apply.

The MQRES stipend is currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt (2008). Tenure is 3.5 years full-time, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the scholarship tenure with domestic students receiving RTS placement for their research degree tuition and International award holders having their fees sponsored.

Further information regarding the projects, may be obtained by contacting the supervisor: Dr James Downes, telephone: +61-2-9850-8900, email: james.downes@mq.edu.au.

Application forms (see below) and conditions for awards are available from the Higher Degree Research Office, telephone +61-2-9850 7987, email: hdrschol@vc.mq.edu.au.

Applications should be forwarded to:
