ICS MQRES Computing Programming Languages PhD Scholarship

Closing Date: 12 September 2008

PhD Scholarship in Computer Programming Languages

A full-time PhD Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) is currently available in the Division of Information and Communication Sciences for a project on programming languages. The successful candidate will undertake PhD research to study unifying, high-level approach to software generation systems.

Software generation automatically produces software from high-level specifications of functionality.  Constructing generation systems from separate tools causes problems, including difficult integration and poor reuse of standard generation methods. We have begun a major initiative to develop high-level, domain-specific notations embedded in a general-purpose language. We use standard notations and abstract machine semantics to specify generators, with a common base to simplify integration and assist reuse. This project will concentrate on the back-end issues of generating efficient, low-level code from the new notations. Evaluation will be based on our more than 15 years experience of developing language processor generation tools.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic and international students. Applicants should have completed an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours in information technology or an equivalent discipline, or equivalent research qualifications, such as a Masters degree with substantial thesis component. Early career professionals interested in returning to higher degree studies are particularly encouraged to apply.

The MQRES stipend is currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt (2008). Tenure is 3.5 years full-time, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the scholarship tenure with domestic students receiving RTS placement for their research degree tuition and International award holders having their fees sponsored.
