ICS MQRES Physics Magnetic Fields PhD Scholarship

Closing Date: 31 March 2008

Magnetic fields in protoplanetary discs

The development of mid-infrared and sub-mm wave astronomical instrumentation has reached the point where population studies of the discs of gas around stars are now possible, with a view to understanding the development of planetary systems around newly-formed stars.  The role of magnetic fields in their formation, evolution and in the development of planets is relatively unexplored.  This PhD project aims to develop an understanding of how the dynamical behaviour of discs is controlled by the magnetic field, and to link this to observations through its effects on microphysical processes such as ionization and chemistry.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic and international students. Applicants should have completed equivalent research qualifications to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours in a relevant discipline, such as a Masters degree with substantial thesis component. We are seeking high calibre, suitably qualified physics/Astrophysics graduates and early career professionals interested in returning to higher degree studies are particularly encouraged to apply.

The MQRES stipend is currently $20,007 p.a. tax exempt (2008). Tenure is a maximum 3.5 years full-time, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees funded for the scholarship tenure. Additional support for project costs and conference travel will also be available.

Further information regarding the projects, may be obtained by contacting Mark Wardle, telephone: +61-2-9850, email: wardle@ics.mq.edu.au.

Application forms (see below), and conditions for MQRES awards, are available from the Higher Degree Research Office by phoning +61-2-9850 7987, by e-mailing hdrschol@vc.mq.edu.au.

Applications should be forwarded to:
